The Old Soldier (war horse)

Original colour-printed wood engraving by Edmund Evans (1826-1892) after a water colour by Basil Bradley, RWS (1842-1904)
Evans was a pre-eminent revivalist of colour printing from wood blocks, known as Chomoxylography, with one of the first coloured plates presented here to London newspaper readers: here he choses to renders a picture of an old war horse in the field stirred by the sound of a trumpet as the soldiers pass. It is an endearing, proud, sad and ever-relevant image then as it is now.He employed and did work for many of The Golden Age of Children's Illustrators, Randolph Caldecott, Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway Richard "Dickie" Doyle.
